Labradoodle History
The rise of the Labradoodle began in a very interesting way. The story goes that in the 1980s many Labs were used as guide dogs. One blind woman in particular from Hawaii needed a dog desperately to help her with her daily activities but her husband was severely allergic to the fur of the Labrador retriever. An organization by the name of the Guide Dogs of Victoria decided to help her. They bred together a standard poodle with a Labrador retriever. The offspring was perfect for this woman's needs. The litter yielded one pup which was hypoallergenic and also had the correct temperament to be considered as a guide dog. From here on in the Labradoodle was well known.
Labradoodles' Appearance
The Labradoodle coat can vary from very curly to slightly wavy. The curlier the coat is the more hypoallergenic the dog becomes. This very curly coat is called Wool. The wavy coat is called Fleece, and the straight coat is very similar to that of the Labrador and is called Hair. The color of the Labradoodle can vary as well. Colors include chocolate, chalk, apricot, and cream, cafe, black, silver, and parti-colored. Both the coat coloring and texture can depend on the parents.
The size of the Labradoodle can be standard, medium, or miniature. Standard size measures at 21 to 24 inches and around 45-80lbs. The Medium size measures at 17 to 10 inches, and around 40-55lbs, and the Miniature size measures in at 12 to 16 inches and around 26-55 lbs.
Labradoodle's Temperament
The temperament of the Labradoodle will vary just like the appearance. The easiest way to determine the temperament or personality of your new Labradoodle puppy is to take a look at the parents. When both parents are calm and even tempered, it is safe to assume that the offspring will carry on those same traits. If you are worried at all about the temperament of your new puppy having a training process and making sure that the puppy is well socialized from a very early age is key. This will help to ensure that your new puppy will be a wonderful member of the family.
Labradoodle's Role
The Labradoodle has become a very popular hybrid breed. To date, the Labradoodle is known as a wonderful family dog and a great companion. The mix seems to carry on the lovable and sweet natured personality of the Labrador retriever while giving families the benefit of an allergy free non-shedding dog. It truly has become one of the top dog breeds in America.
